It’s that wonderful time of year again in Colorado. Am I talking about the aspens turning gold? No. Am I talking about the Denver Broncos taking the field? No. Am I talking about ski season getting started? No.
I’m talking about the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Honestly, we Colorado people don’t know how good we have it. Each year, we get sample the best beers from across the country. And we don’t even have to leave Denver to do it. I really feel bad for all the beers snobs that live in, say, North Dakota.

Think of any time of year, and chances are you can think of a pie to go with it.
Blueberry pie in the summer. Apple and pumpkin pies in the fall. You get the idea.
Americans, so it seems, love their pie (especially Grandma’s), and for good reason.
“Everybody has great memories of pie from their childhood,” says Linda Hoskins, executive director of the Illinois-based American Pie Council. “Even if there was a bad pie, there’s usually a great memory.”

The Bagel Deli & Restaurant has grown deep roots in Denver’s sometimes fickle soil. When a business has been around for 40 years, a couple of assumptions are fair: one, it’s made a name for itself, and two, its owners are doing something right. The Bagel Deli remains a humble mom-n-pop shop, as loyal to its customers as they are to it.

Standing half a block off Boulder’s Pearl Street pedestrian mall, the Black Cat Restaurant doesn’t look like much at first glance from the street. Located in the former space of a Cold Stone Creamery, Black Cat is quietly building a reputation for some of Boulder and the Front Range’s most inspired cuisine. And like many great restaurants, it foregoes an ostentatious façade for a restrained, unassuming exterior. Here, the showcase is the food, not the front entrance or the décor.

Carb-loading and calling it “research” aligns with both my personal and my professional journalistic goals.
To indulge in my cheesy fancy, I embarked on a quest to discover the best macaroni and cheese in Denver. I made a pilgrimage to four of Denver’s favorite restaurants to collect my data and test their claims of greatness: Black Pearl, Steuben’s, nine75, and Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge.

The Great American Beer Festival
really is one of Colorado’s marquee events. Thousands of beer fans
jam the Colorado Conventions Center to sample the best beer this country
has to offer. Earlier I previewed the GABF and I attended the Thursday night session and I (again) found
myself amazed by this truly singular event.

If you have a ticket to the
Great American Beer Festival , it’s good to be you.
For the uninitiated, the Great
American Beer Festival is a yearly gathering of brewers from around
the country put on by the Boulder-based Brewers Association. You could
say it’s the king of beer festivals. This year, 432 breweries will
have more than 1,900 beers on tap, and thousands will filter through
the Colorado Convention Center sipping one-ounce samples of some of
best beer America has to offer.
But if all that sounds daunting,
don’t worry. As a seasoned veteran of the festival, I have a few tips
for you that will keep your trip tasting great and more fulfilling.
