It’s that wonderful time of year again in Colorado. Am I talking about the aspens turning gold? No. Am I talking about the Denver Broncos taking the field? No. Am I talking about ski season getting started? No.
I’m talking about the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Honestly, we Colorado people don’t know how good we have it. Each year, we get sample the best beers from across the country. And we don’t even have to leave Denver to do it. I really feel bad for all the beers snobs that live in, say, North Dakota.

Think of any time of year, and chances are you can think of a pie to go with it.
Blueberry pie in the summer. Apple and pumpkin pies in the fall. You get the idea.
Americans, so it seems, love their pie (especially Grandma’s), and for good reason.
“Everybody has great memories of pie from their childhood,” says Linda Hoskins, executive director of the Illinois-based American Pie Council. “Even if there was a bad pie, there’s usually a great memory.”

City life doesn’t mean you have to squash your desire to grow
I recently visited Sundari Kraft's farm.
She showed me her plans for the crop schedule and layout this year, and worked on building plant spacers while we talked.
From where we sat, I could see where the garlic had started to come up, the section where the asparagus would soon surface, and other areas which still needed to be prepped for this year's crop.
I didn't have to look very far—Sundari's farm (a part of it, at least) is right in her North Denver back yard.

The Bagel Deli & Restaurant has grown deep roots in Denver’s sometimes fickle soil. When a business has been around for 40 years, a couple of assumptions are fair: one, it’s made a name for itself, and two, its owners are doing something right. The Bagel Deli remains a humble mom-n-pop shop, as loyal to its customers as they are to it.

Standing half a block off Boulder’s Pearl Street pedestrian mall, the Black Cat Restaurant doesn’t look like much at first glance from the street. Located in the former space of a Cold Stone Creamery, Black Cat is quietly building a reputation for some of Boulder and the Front Range’s most inspired cuisine. And like many great restaurants, it foregoes an ostentatious façade for a restrained, unassuming exterior. Here, the showcase is the food, not the front entrance or the décor.

Battling loneliness and finding relationships in Colorado’s deceiving beauty.
When I decided to move the wondrous landscape of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains on my own, I never considered the toll nature may take on my emotions.
Having lived largely independently since college, I escaped alone from the busy, man-made beauty of Chicago streets for the natural, God-carved exquisiteness of the Continental Divide. Though I found the view out my window thrilling and inspiring, I couldn’t help but feel a powerful loneliness.
“Yeah, it’s good to have a boyfriend or girlfriend out here,” new friends told me. “It can get lonely.”
I started to ponder the mountain life and its effect on relationships, wanting to know more about the mysterious forces behind those fabled rocks. Valentine’s Day seemed as good a time as any to delve into my query.

Carb-loading and calling it “research” aligns with both my personal and my professional journalistic goals.
To indulge in my cheesy fancy, I embarked on a quest to discover the best macaroni and cheese in Denver. I made a pilgrimage to four of Denver’s favorite restaurants to collect my data and test their claims of greatness: Black Pearl, Steuben’s, nine75, and Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge.
