"Educating Rita" (7:30PM - 11:59PM)
The Denver Victorian Playhouse presents Educating Rita By Willy Russell Directed by Rick Bernstein "I wanted to make a play which engaged and was relevant to those who considered themselves uneducated, Those whose daily language is not the language of the university or the theatre. I wanted to write a play which would attract, and be as valid for, the Rita’s in the audience as the Franks." - Willy Russell The Denver Victorian Playhouse opens “Educating Rita” on Friday, January 2 with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m. through February 21, 2009. Tickets are $22.00 and available by calling 303-433-4343 or online at www.denvervic.com. Frank (Wade Wood) is a tutor of English whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to the bottle. Rita (Rita Broderick) is a hairdresser hungry to find some meaning to life. With Frank as her tutor Rita embarks on an Open University course and her education process begins. The effects are both amusing and dramatic as her fresh, intuitive approach becomes clouded and stifled as she grapples with the problem of a formal education, while Frank also learns something - to believe in himself again. University lecturer Frank needs to earn some extra money, so he agrees to tutor an Open University student. His student Rita is a brash, earthy hairdresser with a recently discovered passion for higher education, much to the dismay of her husband Denny. In her attempts to appreciate literature, Rita challenges the attitudes of a traditional university, teaching Frank to question his own understanding of his work and himself. The play explores the relationship between student and tutor. The play was inspired by Willy's experiences at evening classes. Much of the comedy arises from Rita's fresh, unschooled reaction to the classics of English literature, but she is never patronized by Russell, who recognizes from his own experience that education is a means of escape from one's own circumstances. "Shining City" By Conor McPherson (7:30PM - 11:59PM)
Miners Alley Presents the Regional Premiere of Shining City by Conor McPherson Directed by Richard H. Pegg Set in Dublin “Shining City” takes place in the disheveled office of Ian, a former priest turned therapist. Ian is visited by John, a middle-aged man who has recently lost his wife in a tragic accident. John is having trouble sleeping and is desperate for help, but Ian has his own troubles, including a new baby and a crumbling relationship. John soon reveals the source of his insomnia: he's been visited by the ghost of his dead wife and is now terrified to return home. In this contemporary ghost story, Conor McPherson explores what it means to lose faith-in God, in relationships and in one's self. “Shining City” plays at Miners Alley, 1224 Washington Avenue in downtown Golden from January 9 – February 15, 2009. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. *Final Sunday performance on February 15 is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available by calling 303-935-3044 or online at minersalley.com. “Shining City” will be a Miners Alley debut for both Josh Hartwell (Ian) and Kevin Lowry (Lawrence); Ken Street (John) previously appeared in “My Old Lady” and Laura Norman (Neasa) in “Matt and Ben”. This is Director Richard Pegg’s third ‘outing’ with Conor MacPherson having previously directed and designed the Colorado premiere of “The Weir” in 2002 at South Suburban in Littleton, and designed the Massachusetts premiere the year before on Cape Cod. Also exciting is the collaborative partnership with Janelle Christie as the Assistant Director. In 2001 Connor McPherson was only 30 and at the top of the theatrical world. He had written more than 10 plays, had three films to his credit, won numerous awards and was a burgeoning star on this side of the Atlantic with his play “The Weir” enjoying a smash eight-month run on Broadway. “Shining City” ran on Broadway in 2006 and was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Play. “I was blown away…quiet, haunting and absolutely glorious” - The New York Times Miners Alley Playhouse presents “Shining City” A contemporary ghost story that explores what it means to lose faith. PHAMALY Presents €Steel Magnolias” (7:30PM - 11:59PM)
PHAMALY kicks off its 20th anniversary season with STEEL MAGNOLIAS By Robert Harling Directed by Nick Sugar Artistic Director Steve Wilson Truvy’s Beauty Salon is the unofficial hub of Chinquapin, La. It is here that these softhearted “magnolias” with the steely disposition come to chitchat with, counsel, criticize and comfort one another. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (Briana Berthiaume), who is not sure whether or not she is still married, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy (Leslie Rusher) dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (Regan Linton), ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee (Amber Marsh), who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn (Lucy Roucis), whose daughter, Shelby (Lyndsay Palmer), is about to marry a "good ole boy." “Steel Magnolias” is alternately hilarious and touching. The play focuses on the camaraderie of these six Southern women who talk, gossip, needle and harangue each other through the best of times - - and comfort and repair one another through the worst. PHAMALY presents “Steel Magnolias” at the Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9900 E. Colfax Ave, Aurora previewing Friday January 9; opening Saturday January 10 and runs Friday & Saturday @ 7:30pm, Sunday @ 2pm, Thursdays Jan 22 & 29 @ 7:30pm through January 31, 2009. Robert Harling was inspired to write his first play after his sister Susan died of complications from diabetes. “Steel Magnolias” premiered off-Broadway at the WPA Theater in 1987, then quickly transferred to the Lucille Lortel Theater and became an instant sensation, running for three years and spawning a hit movie. Harling wrote the hilarious spoof "Soapdish" (1991), which reteamed him with Sally Field, as a soap opera diva whose off-screen life was as outrageous as her onscreen one. He also adapted "The First Wives Club" (1996) and made his directorial debut later that same year with "The Evening Star," based on Larry McMurtry’s novel. PHAMALY’s mission is to enable people with disabilities to showcase their talents and abilities through live productions and to make the performing arts more accessible to everyone. Each actor is physically or developmentally disabled, some are blind, others hearing-impaired and several are in wheelchairs. "Mother Hicks" (7:30PM - 11:59PM)
Firehouse Theater Company Mother Hicks By Suzan Zeder Directed by Kris Hipps Firehouse Theatre presents “Mother Hicks” by Suzan Zeder on Friday, January 16 with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at 2.p.m. through February 15, 2009 with an Industry night on Monday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17; ($10 on Mon., Feb. 2) and available by calling 303-562-3232 or online at www.firehousetheatercompany.com. Set in southern Illinois during the great Depression, this play centers around the unlikely friendship between Mother Hicks, an outcast old woman and a headstrong orphan known only as Girl, in search of her people. Mother Hicks is a witch...people say. Their story is told through the eyes of Tuc, a deaf-mute young man, eloquent in the language of his silence, who "hears every word with his eyes." The play, written by Susan Zeder, one of the nation’s leading playwrights for family audiences, explores the roots of prejudice and looks at fear bred of misunderstanding. The tale, told partly through poetry and sign language, chronicles the journeys of these three, who find themselves and each other, in a troubled time. In doing so, it speaks to the redeeming power of acceptance and love. The Firehouse Theater production features Linda Suttle as Mother Hicks, Patrick Mann as Tuc and Danielle Samler as Girl. Rounding out the cast is Nancy Cain (Alma), Colin Cooper (Clovis/Jake), Brice Foster (Ricky Ricks) Jess Geesaman (Izzy), Matthew Schultz (Hosiah/Wilson Walker), Deb Flomberg (Chorus) and Emma Atuire as May-ry and Girl’s understudy. Susan Zeder’s plays have been performed in all fifty states, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Germany, Israel and New Zealand; and have been published in Great Britain, Germany and Japan. She is the first holder of an endowed chair in Theatre For Youth/Playwriting at the University of Texas and a three-time winner of the Distinguished Play Award given by the American Alliance of Theatre and Education. In 1996, Ms. Zeder was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre in Washington, D.C. In 1987 “Mother Hicks” was awarded The American Alliance for Theatre and Education Distinguished Play Award. Rhine River Adventure: A Travelogue Narrated By Filmmaker Rudi Thurau (7:30PM - 11:59PM)
The Lakewood Cultural Center Presents Rhine River Adventure: A travelogue narrated by filmmaker Rudi Thurau Some people are born for adventure and others to entertain. Rudi Thurau was born to do both. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, we will travel with Rudi to the eastern Alps in Switzerland and the source of the Rhine River, through the Black forest, ending in Katwijk on the North Sea. Prominent throughout the trip is the beautiful Rhine countryside with skiing and whitewater rafting, spectacular cities and celebrated historic landmarks. Tickets are $10 for adults and are available by calling 303-987-7845, or online by clicking the Green Stripe for online services at www.Lakewood.org, or at the Lakewood Cultural Center Box Office, 470 S. Allison Parkway (Wadsworth and Alameda). Student, senior and group discounts are available. Free parking on site. The urge to travel emerged early in Rudi’s life. In 1956, after completing his education, the young adventurer pedaled his bicycle away from his homeland of Germany with just a few Deutschmarks, a camera and a guitar for comfort. Eight months and 6,000 miles later, he paused in India. After such a lengthy odyssey, his appetite for adventure had become insatiable. Scrubbing the deck of a freighter brought Rudi back to the European continent where he joined forces with a young American who was the proud owner of a motor scooter. Riding tandem, they headed for Africa where they crossed 1,500 miles of the Sahara desert. On the Niger River, the two adventurers devised a unique mode of transportation - a raft powered by their motor scooter! From Africa, Rudi traveled to the United States. Under the auspices of President Eisenhower's "People to People Foundation,” he lectured as a traveling Ambassador of Good Will. Since then, he has made his home in America. His film adventuring continued through Mexico, Central and South America. With two companions, he tackled the Amazon River on a seven-month raft voyage. That was followed by a breathtaking journey down Devil's River, on to Lake Titicaca in a reed boat, then to Tierra Del Fuego at the tip of South America. His past films include Condor over America and My California Adventure. Rudi speaks (and sings) in many languages, but he is best known for his humor and lighthearted narration. The Lakewood Cultural Center 2008 - 2009 Performing Arts Season is generously supported by Aura Spa and Wellness Center at the Sheraton Denver West and the Rocky Mountain News – Closer to Home. Programs are made possible in part through funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) – Metro Denver’s unique commitment to its nonprofit art, scientific and cultural institutions, and The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado – Supporting community nonprofits while highlighting the contributions of gay men and lesbians.
